amazing cakes, how sweet...

my sister concocted both of these. amazing. i know. i just wanted to share. well. and she's done some others that are totally awesome before. i just don't have access to those photos at the current moment.and edee made this one a while back. and those cute little cupcakes. it's just that the kids in our family don't enjoy sweets that often. but when they do, it's ALL OUT time.

the deep chrome canyons of manhattan

we went to new york again this weekend! it was so lovely --- literally. minus the traffic we hit on the way there (it turned into a 6 hour bus ride instead of the standard 4 1/2...). saturday was the most beautiful day!! not too hot... not too cold. ben and i counted and we [ben, brandon and i] walked approximately 90 blocks yesterday. it seems like a lot... but if you're walking the north and south direction the blocks are much shorter. and well--- it's just kind of the new york way: walk! i heart new york and i feel a little tempted to pick up and move there sometimes. but then when we return to dc, i just feel a lot of love for this place. our home. our first home together. and it's just so great to live here. *sigh* i love it all :)
the joy of an early lunch: escaping the long line at the shake-a shack.
thank you sunshine!!
ben loves shake shack for the shack stack. but for me, it's the hopskotch. [thanks si... i will always think of you!!]
all mine. well. i shared. i really did.st patrick'sthere's nothing like a reflection of stained glass on the floor... at least for me :)testing out the equipment at apple. i love standing on love with my love...?doing the "touristy" pose.we had to try a couple magnolia cupcakes, just to make sure that georgetown is for sure the best. hands down. no competition. georgetown: i am loyal forever.but the banana pudding was totally amazing. rearrry. thanks for that, magnolia. my favorite color is rainbow? [the nbc experience store]you know if those were peanut butter m&m's... we'd have a problemthe lion made some birdy friends (the nyc public liberry)
this lady reminded me of the "purple librarian" lady at the boise public library when i was little. she would wear everything purple, from her make up- to her hair and i'm pretty sure her skin was turning purple. so basically this is the same lady, just reincarnated and now she loves orange.
creating a wish-list of overpriced souvenirs...

the very purpose of our trip was to see jeff tweedy live. it was ben's (and my) first time. jeff is the lead singer of wilco. and wilco is one of ben's very favorite bands. i quite enjoy wilco (and jeff) myself--- but it was enough for me to just see and listen to how excited ben was. everything jeff said to the audience was comical, but ben laughed extra loud and giddy-ly because he was just too excited :) it was really cute.
thank you clearwater [a hudson river environmental group] and beacon high school (the show was at the high school auditorium)! oh and thanks pete seger too! he's almost 90 and totally awesome!

this morning we left new york and it was cold and rainy... and gloomy... but...
we came back to... SPRING! we anticipate a very sunny & crowded cherry blossom festival.

*this post's title comes from "hummingbird" by: wilco

sushi and strawberries

maybe i'm getting a little boring with my posts. but i love this place. and all our little places here. we went to kotobuki sushi again. but it's just because i love it so much... and it was our little "birthday dinner" for me. because it's nice to go out and do those things. and kotobuki is tiny and hidden and i think the sushi chefs and servers sort of know who we are by now. as i've said before, the beatles are only played at this restuarant, which i love. ben asked the lady server (who took our picture) if she ever gets sick of the beatles and she said, "no" with a smile.
this was the first time we tried their mochi ice cream. it was mango. and amazing.
i'm not actually this tall. there was just a conveniently placed chair for me to stand on and get my photo taken with the lovely sign.
later we made strawberry scones for the following morning. ben put on "strawberry fields forever" by the beatles and then we listened to the "across the universe" version. and we watched this [because i LOVE this part of the movie]:

we stayed up until 12:30 just to finish them. it was worth it.then we ate them on thursday morning. i had blackberry tea and ben had raspberry. and we had lemon curd.
see the hydrangea plant? ben got that for me, for my bday. I LOVE IT.

have you seen the latest postcard stamps? SO CUTE. you might all get a post card soon...
oh, and these shoes were my birthday present to myself.
and i took this cool "color accent" photo of ben. he's planning for our upcoming trip (out of our $1 london travel book from goodwill). i heart you goodwill.

life in the big cherry blossom

alan nicknamed our DC, the big cherry blossom. i guess that works well for us... but what about NYC? i don't get the whole, big apple thing :)

ben and i were fortunate enough to have some family come our way the last couple weeks. as you know, kris, sam and annie arrived first and then shayna and alan last week.

shayna and i enjoyed a [rare] sunny afternoon when she arrived on march 18. we toured our apartment, had rice cakes and talked about old times. we took the train, walked through Chinatown. then shopping at H&M. shay and i are sisters and we don't really shop together, so we thought we'd try it. (we even shopped as 3 sisters on thursday & saturday with kris.) then we took the train again, this time to dupont. it's a circle. we walked to... you guessed it... mr. yogato.
i was saying how i didn't really like frozen yogurt so much when i was young. then shay said, "that's because mom used to put herbs in our yogurt!" shocked i said, "what?!!" but then i shortly remembered the taste and the green essence of the herbs.
then people watching. in the circle.

thurs i had to work, but shayna and i got chop't for lunch.

we met up slightly later, just as kristen was rolling back into town from philly-ny-baltimore-dc.

i had never been to the library of congress. it's really pretty. and it's amazing that every book that has even been published in the u.s. is there (thanks kris...). and it was pretty. the mosaics reminded me of italy. and how badly i would love to do that kind of artwork. someday.
train again. to foggy bottom. we tried the georgetown connector bus (my first time) and i asked ben later, why have we never tried it? i thought since we were already in georgetown and we were having the "treats tour" of georgetown, we got cupcakes spontaneously. i love having sister approval on one of my very favorite things.
for dinner: we ate tacos from el charrito. it gets better everytime.

friday, the sisters and sam & annie met me at my office to take a tour and to better envision my day-to-day.
later we made baked mac&cheese. shay, ben and i picked up dairy godmother and we watched, sleeping beauty. i think i was 5 the last time i saw it. good show.
annie blowing on the mac and cheese to cool it down.

saturday- MARCH 21! my birthday!!! we ate crêpes.
we all [seven] got showered and ready and took the bus/train to tenleytown.
p.s. i heart WAMU 88.5
we took a nice stroll (it was a pretty day and all i wanted to do was take a walk) to fort reno. so cool. i loved our little picnic.
i first saw fort reno when i was going the wrong direction on a bus to a job interview. i didn't get that job, but i discovered this unique landmark!
[my head shot]if you can imagine: the sisters and i went shopping again... this time for me, for my birthday. we later had dinner, homemade pizzas and fruit salad!! incredibly delicious. katie and dan joined the party, so it was a nice full house!thanks again for all who came.
thanks ben for surprising me with the shoes i've been lusting after for at least 6 months (and everything else)!
thanks sisters&husbands of sisters for the great clothes & earrings & keychain!
thanks paul&eun&bp&p for the tj's gift card. i love tj's!
thanks brandon&edee&b&a for the nice card!
thanks mom&dad for the pending pony express package!
thanks dave&linda for the wonderful gift and delicious cake!
thanks joe&christina&z for the birthday wishes!
thanks katie for the amazing green scarf!
thanks dan for the beautiful steamer pot!sunday...

annie opened her presents (her bday is 2 days after mine). the kids played "cars" on the wii w/ ben. it's best we kept that secret until the last night :)

we miss you guys! i love you all... come back soon!!!
