el capital: santo domingo [it's historic]

the dominican republic is actually very historic when it comes to colonialism. that one guy, christopher columbus first landed on the d.r. in the north (before any other country) and colonized it. santo domingo is home to a lot of buildings built in his time, which are very well preserved. and columbus is rumored to be buried in santo domingo, but also rumored to be buried in spain. hmmm. i’m rooting for santo domingo.

this is faro colon, where columbus is rumored to be buried (it's a lighthouse that is only lit up about once a year. and it's in the shape of cross). a very cool structure.
columbus' grave.
bartholomew columbus' house (right, ben?)
fortaleza ozama (an old fort...)
the oldest church in the americas!! no joke.

we also got a bit of culture too… since i’m all about culture and anthropology, i just ate it all up.

baseball is the d.r.’s favorite sport. i loved seeing these guys playing their own little pick up game. and of course we LOVED the multicolored buildings which are EVERYWHERE.the ladies' street :) --- the oldest street in the americas.

dominicans love to play dominoes. ben and i need to play more and get really good so we can have a tournament with these people when we go back.
