over the weekend i donated two big bags of clothes and a few other household things to dc goodwill.
i like that feeling. i let the items sit in the house for a few weeks before i donated them (or had ben donate them, rather). just to be sure i wanted to purge all those things.

for a while now i've been trying to instill in myself the concept of NEED over WANT. and trying my best not to buy things just because they are on sale. quite a few bloggers have talked about this, but i especially like how elaine puts it.

sometimes i get frustrated about how many things i have. why do i have all these things?

and then ben and i were talking about how we don't need any more clothes or any more things... like ever. ha.

then there is the souvenir dilemma. we travel. so what to do? yes... so it depends in such a case.
that's what i LOVE about photographs. they are my souvenirs. and the blog is my book of memories.

i hope to do another purge once i am all done with school. then i hope i won't have to do it again... because hopefully i can simplify and stick to my goals. hold me to it.

hey ben, remember that time we went to six flags and also when we swam at the lake in idaho?

while it is cold and snowy outside...
i am thinking warm thoughts from our summer.

the summer photos were taken with an underwater disposable camera. i love that these turned out like they were taken in the 70s.

i love sunshine. but i also love snow. hmmm. dilemma.

the very happy audience
katie rose clarke and mandy gonzalez (current galinda and elfaba on broadway) found here

i guess our spontaneous trip to nyc was what it took to win the lottery at wicked, the broadway musical. actually, the birthday girl, celeste won the wicked lottery and then ben won the lottery to american idiot so the two couples did a swap of tickets.
ben and i at wicked
brandon and celeste at american idiot

my first time to wicked. and i am totally still on a high (still listening to the music all day)...

i know for some, musicals just aren't their thing,
but i love them.

and being in the first row and dead center... you really feel like you are a part of the stage.

i loved it, ok?

and we even talked to the conductor afterward. i could really get used to going to broadways...

true love.

ever since this lovely blogger posted the following poem, i knew i loved it.
i really wish i wrote clever, real poetry like this.

so for now i am borrowing.

true love by judith viorst

It is true love because
I put on eyeliner and a concerto and make pungent observations about the great issues of the day
Even when there's no one here but him,
And because
I do not resent watching the Green Bay Packers
Even though I am philosophically opposed to football,
And because
When he is late for dinner and I know he must be either having an affair or lying dead in the middle of the street,
I always hope he's dead.

It's true love because
If he said quit drinking martinis but I kept drinking them and the next morning I couldn't get out of bed,
He wouldn't tell me he told me,
And because
He is willing to wear unironed undershorts
Out of respect for the fact that I am philosophically opposed to ironing,
And because
If his mother was drowning and I was drowning and he had to choose one of us to save,
He says he'd save me.

It's true love because
When he went to San Francisco on business while I had to stay home with the painters and the exterminator and the baby who was getting the chicken pox,
He understood why I hated him,
And because
When I said that playing the stock market was juvenile and irresponsible and then the stock I wouldn't let him buy went up twenty-six points,
I understood why he hated me,
And because
Despite cigarette cough, tooth decay, acid indigestion, dandruff, and other features of married life that tend to dampen the fires of passion,
We still feel something
We can call
True love.

thesisizing, senioritis and other recent thoughts

hi. i love dc for

giving me an amazing historical city experience
giving me a graduate education
having a zillion amazing restaurants
having a lot of free, incredible museums
giving me my first "real" job
allowing me to meet a lot of intelligent and marvelous people

the last little bit i've felt really sort of anxious and stressed about my final semester of school and life soon thereafter.
i like to plan. so the unknown can be rough for me.
i want my thesis to be perfect and super riveting.
i want to be a better wife, a better friend, a better listener.

i have a hard time focusing when i get so anxious.

anyone else out there have anxiety issues?
any tips...
for me?

photos are more diana minis i just developed...

restaurant week: dc foodies' favorite time of year

i love dc restaurant week, obviously.

i realize now i didn't get great shots of food, but at least i captured the pistachio saffron ice cream at the indian restaurant, rasika. at first the ice cream was strange but then with a couple more bites and a little strawberry, it was amazing.

restaurant week is when a lot of great restaurants have a prix fixe menu for lunch and dinner for three courses... so it's great to take advantage of the more pricey places.

favorite appetizer (for emily and ben):
crispy spinach at rasika. the spinach was fried but not like you'd think. it was light and the perfect amount of crunch. and it had this amazing chutney yogurt mixed in.

favorite entree:
tikka masala (for emily) at rasika. it was just creamy and the right amount of spicey for me. and i liked that on the menu, it said it was the national dish of england because it's good to be honest that tikka masala isn't native indian. ha.

duck con fit (for ben) at cafe atlantico. it was sugar encrusted or something. it rocked.

favorite dessert:
gulab jamun with cardamom ice cream (for emily) at rasika... ok, so i liked rasika. the gulab jamun is a sort of tiny cake that is soaked in honey and yummies

key lime pie (for ben) at black salt. self explanatory deliciousness.

blah blah blah

we love

i feel like... one must eat in order to get through life... so why not eat well?

regarding the new header (aka my talented sister)

lovely sister shayna was kind enough to put together a new header (and side tabs) for the blog.

she is a very talented graphic designer, as you can tell. i told her what my vision for the header was and i got it. it was that simple.

just wanted to post this "fyi" because i like to brag about the talented people i know and also because several people have commented on the new header.

and also just to let you know, i know someone who might be able to help you with your next header remodel...

great falls national park.

aren't the falls great? (that is my little joke...)

on sunday after church, ben and i journeyed the 40 minutes from the district to great falls national park in virginia. it was a great sunday outing because the drive was pretty, the roads weren't busy and once we got there it's a short leisurely walk to the three different viewpoints of the falls.

i sure enjoy visiting national parks... there are a million around these parts, not to mention all the amazing parks in utah.

i can't wait to enjoy more of the outdoors when this silly cold weather is gone...

one of my favorite at home date nights

homemade pizza and root beer.
and a movie. on dvd.

well we buy the pizza dough for $1 at trader joe's... but it's delicious and whole wheat. nothing like chicken apple sausage and lots and lots of delicious cheese.

thanks ben for the simple, lovely dates that don't have to be anything fancy to be my favorite thing in the world.

i love being at home in our cozy apartment. especially with you.

i think i like developing my own film

self portrait. tidal basin. september 2010.
mon montréal. september 2010.
sisters in montréal. september 2010.
lovely rowhouses. montréal. september 2010.
lovely dc. september 2010.
meridian hill park, dc. september 2010.
fall in dc. october 2010.
hitsville (aka motown)... detroit, october 2010.

today i developed some more film. it's been a long time. it's a hard process but i think i really like it. especially when the film turns out well...

i put off developing for a while because i psyche myself out.

but... i like to have projects like this. it's good for me to take breaks from research and writing and do things like blog, clean, develop film, projects around the house.
there is always something.

so yes. i love film. and the little diana mini.

first day of the last class

sometimes ben does cute stuff... like brings home cupcakes from the new crumbs location that opened up near his office.

then my stomach is happy.

today is the first day of my last class.
i just have one class this semester. and then that whole thesis thing.
then it's alllll over in may.

i'm excited about my class because i know my professor rocks and is beyond brilliant. i like those things in a professor.

but it's mostly just strange to think this is my last
(no, a phd is not in the cards for me)

hmmm i think i love school
i love attending class

and learning

who i am kidding?
i will probably take university classes the rest
my life.

(just to see what the cool college kids are up to... of course)

tea and polaroids

there is a great polaroid exhibit at a local h street coffee/tea shop called sova. i loved seeing so many polaroids in one place.
i wish i would have known about the exhibit in advance... so i could have submitted some of my work... hehe.
the tea was great, polaroids lovely and company the best.

i loved going with caroline and talking about our holiday vacations, school, no school, jobs and many other important things.

dc is so great for coffee shops, little exhibits and fun adventures even on a monday night.

i love visitors (brother brandon comes to visit)

me and brandonus
lobster enchiladas

ben and i were lucky enough to have my brother brandon come stay with us this weekend.

i swear i was doing the ugly-belly-laugh all weekend. because i was just laughing so much.

brandon arrived around noon on friday and we just ate and played constantly from then until he left sunday morning.

to eat:
a great italian place, acqua al 2, very legit and delicious
a latin american mixture of fun, ceiba (where i got the lobster enchiladas)
and the one and only, zaytinya, where we love to go (greek/turkish/lebanese goodness)
i also made some grapefruit sorbet (with the gelato maker), it was perfect.
washington, dc is just full of wonderful eateries

for play:
a visit to nordstrom rack and wonderful factory stores (brandon shares our love for nordstrom rack...)
xbox playing...
movie going
attempting to go bowling...
attempting to go bowling again...
the elvis at 21 exhibit at the national portrait gallery. very lovely photographs.
attempting to attend a hockey game
ipad playing

i realized. it's all about being together.
we really enjoyed ourselves.

thanks again for the fun, brandon.

ben wanted to make sure his "baby" was in the photo too (the helicopter)
(ben, me, lindsay, baby donovan and randy)
randy, donovan, ben, garret
baby donovan kept leaning back and hugging me.

vid music: red hot chili peppers, snow (hey oh)

due to the sudden crash of my computer over the utah vacation, i lost a few videos i took. i salvaged the rest of them and put them together.
the opening shot is of ben's new remote control helicopter that he LOVES (friend scotty in the background) and then the snowboarders at the end are:
hilary, me, then ben.
